hdjr,

I covered my building shorts on the sell off last week. After the January profit taking dried up, money started flowing back into the sector. I agree it will be a great place to short, but the market seems to want to take them a little higher before they start a sustained decline.

Short builders as interest rates begin to increase and long energy as the economy recovers should be a great combination in Q1.

Jim

HD:

Thanks for the Texas r.e. report. That puts Texas, California and the Pacific Northwest in the toilet as far as I know.

You might want to look at TOL's chart:

stockcharts.com[h,a]dhclynay[pd20,2!b50!b200!b25!i!f][iut!uk14!ub14!ud20!lc3!lf!lh14,3!la12,26,9]

It made an inverted hammer on Friday, traded all the way up to 46 apparently, and closed down. Nasty long tail, waving in the sky, like a beacon: "it's safe to short." I see lower lows, lower highs all the way down for this sector, and will look to take positions this week. [EDIT: the 46 was some sort of a rogue trade, as someone pointed out: 300 shares at 46, either negligence or intentional evil, imho. So cancel the pattern for now--which makes me worry just a tad about investing on patterns, GIGO??]

OT: Speaking of taking positions, I decided that the received M&A knowledge that "an all-cash offer well above market for companies is rarely defeated" was going to hold true in the WY/WLL transaction as well, and am rewarded this morning with a $16K boost to the portfolio. I only bought 2K shares, thinking this little side bet was worth only about $90K. If I had guessed wrong, the stock could have settled down to the low $30s, which would have been unpleasant. All's well that ends well. When I next type up my resume, I will have to find a line for "takeover arbitrageur."
