Obviously, companies like VOD aren't that concerned. They just want some high speed data. They are confident that harmonization will blend the differences between CDMA2000 and WCDMA over time. The economics for 1xEV are overwhelming, but that doesn't mean you can bypass CDMAONE, IS 95B, & 1X to get there.

The same is true for GSM/GPRS. Convergence of 1xEV and WCDMA/GPRS doesn't matter until you have a WCDMA network in place. Following the roadmap for Qualcomm's MSM 6XXX chipsets provides excellent visibility for the ongoing development of WCDMA standards this year and next.

CDMA is an evolutionary pathway. The market doesn't care what the economics for WCDMA are as long as GSM operators quickly expand their GPRS networks to incorporate WCDMA in new spectrum.
