Somewhere around the mid seventies, Diefenbaker cancelled the Aero. Ever since then, Canada has not done her fair share, IMO.

It probably was not economical for Canada to design and build a new fighter plane unless they thought they could export a lot of them. In many ways it would make more sense to buy an American design, which they eventually did.
