>>Five killed, 20 injured in attack on American Center in Kolkata
Sumali Moitra (Reuters)
Kolkata, January 22

Unidentified gunmen fired on a US government office in Kolkata early on Tuesday, killing five
policemen and wounding 20 people, police said.

Pools of blood, upturned chairs and pieces of clothing lay scattered on the footpath outside the building
and bullet holes scarred the security wall.

Police cordoned off the area after the attack -- believed the first against an official US facility in India --
creating chaos in the heart of India's most densely populated city.

A US embassy spokesman in New Delhi said four men on two motorcycles opened fire with automatic
weapons as police guards were changing shift at 6:30 am.

He said the wounded included 18 police, a pedestrian and a private security guard. No American
citizens were hurt.

Police earlier said the attack was carried out by two men.

The US government offices, known as the American Center, house the US press attaché, a trade office
and a library popular with local residents. The consulate is in a separate building a few blocks away.

"The American interest was definitely the target," Kolkata police commissioner Sujoy Chakraborty told
Star News television. <<

Connected to this, I presume:

At least 10 people are reported to have been injured, one of them seriously, in a gun attack at a shopping mall in west Jerusalem.
...
The incident comes after the militant Islamic group, Hamas, said an incursion by Israeli forces into the Palestinian controlled West Bank town of Nablus opened the door to an all-out war on Israel.
Four Hamas members were killed in the Israeli action.
"This massacre opens the door wide open for a fierce war, which will reach the Zionist gangs everywhere, and with all means," Hamas said in a statement issued on its website.

No doubt the response will be to pour more oil on troubled, er, fires...
