"are due to hit store shelves in February. "

Sounds like a paper launch to me...

Monica,
RE: Unlike yourself, I don't hang around in DIY shops.

Can you think for yourself? or anything else?

Dear Monica:

Do you even read what you write? Look at the availability date for the NW 2.2 system, "February 2002". That is a few weeks into the future (from 2 to 6 weeks depending on when in February it starts shipping). Thus, Sony does not have them for sale right now.

Pete

Why does Sony need this footnote, Monica? (1) GHz denotes microprocessor internal clock speed. Other factors affect application performance.

Perhaps they are afraid of the fact that an XP 2000+ smokes the Northwood 2.2 in many graphics editing applications like Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, etc.

Perhaps because the standard machine with SDRAM is slower than an XP1700+ system that can be bought for less than $1,000 with 512M DDR memory.

Actually, since even more of a Northwood die runs at half speed (the 512K L2 cache, for example), Sony would do well to change the footnote.
