China this month cut tariffs 33% on electronic products and 73% on other IT products, as part of its commitment in joining the World Trade Organization. This is part of a phased reduction over the next three years to eliminating tariffs completely on these goods.

Included in the list of tariff cuts are microprocessors from 15% down to 6%; microprocessors in the form of systems, from 15% to 3.8%; and mobile computers from 15% to 3.8%. Tariffs were eliminated completely on minicomputers and mainframes.

Also, duties were eliminated on scanners, digitizers, laser and ink jet printers, hard disk drives, floppy disk drives and CD drivers.

Tariffs were cut from 15% to 3.8% on modems, network concentrators, optical communication apparatus, Ethernet chips, cable digital communication equipment and communication network synchronizing equipment. The mouse, one of the few peripherals where China is the leading producer in the world, retains a 3% tariff rate.

Tariffs were also eliminated on many types of semiconductor materials, including monocrystalline silicon and other compounded silicon. Some semiconductor wafer blanks also were cut to zero tariffs, while other types were cut from 14% to 6.2%.
