I staked a pipeline late last summer in western Oklahoma. It was through a wheat field(crop land for at least the last 60 years). Private property. Natural gas company had to get something called a "storm water permit". The archaeologist walked the stake line before construction. Turns out this was some sort of major indian trading post. They declared the entire quarter section off limits. Pottery shards, drill points, and even something called a pit house were found. This all in cropland that has been farmed probably since the 20's.

Interesting how the Government can control private property.
