Pa. Utility Photographing Poles

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A utility that lost track of the companies that have strung
lines from its 300,000 utility poles has begun a three-year project to photograph
each pole and try to sort out who is using them.

After a half century of leasing the poles to telephone companies and others who
needed somewhere to hang their lines, Duquesne Light Co. is unsure whose lines
are whose. It also believes squatters may have strung lines illegally on the
company's poles, spread over 800 square miles in the Pittsburgh area.

``There are so many companies that attach to our utility poles,'' said Duquesne
spokesman John Laudenslager.

Utility employee Daniel Baker has taken pictures of about 20,000 poles so far.
While seven hours a day taking pictures of utility poles might seem laborious, he
says he was happy to get the job.

``I had done three years of construction,'' he said, ``and this is a lot easier.''
