As soon as the U.S. gets a banking and monetary system like the Japanese system, I suppose I might think like the Japanese and worry about getting into the same boat.

And it is a bit strange that now the conversation on this thread has shifted from *real estate generally as an investment* to making a rational decision about *when* to buy real estate. The *when* ALWAYS depends on one's financial situation and how best to maximize one's assets, not to mention where one lives and what the real estate market is like in that particular area.

For some people, real estate ownership isn't going to cut it, at least for now. But to condemn real estate ownership is a bit foolish unless one has a complete and accurate vision of one's finances and how real estate fits in the portfolio.

I agree this conversation is getting silly. Been in too many of these arguments over the years to know it's a winning argument unless the person one is arguing with KNOWS his financial picture and understands real estate extremely well. Some do; some don't. That's why my last word is: If in doubt, consult a financial advisor.
