In the case of 3D Studio MAX, "smokes" was definitely the wrong word. In fact an XP2000+ DDR system did benchmark 1 in 1504 seconds vs. 1476 seconds for the NW 2200. However, the latter used DDR memory and the Sony computer we were talking about comes with SDRAM, which would lower it's results by at least 6%. I was shocked to read that the NW core is 61% faster than the 'old' P4 core on this particular benchmark. aceshardware.com

Other graphics intensive apps at Aces show the usual superiority of the Athlon, however.

Bryce 4 is 7% faster on XP2000+ than NW 2200. Add another 7% for SDRAM.

Elastic Reality (3D Modelling) is 18% faster. Add another 12% for SDRAM penalty.

CorelDraw9 runs a full 20% faster on the XP2000+. Add another 5% for SDRAM penalty.

And why did Sony choose Intel's 2.2 GHz Pentium 4 instead of AMD's Athlon XP? Could it have something to do with customer preferences?

Because "MHz sells" and because Intel spends a lot of money on marketing. But as time goes on, a lot of those DIY geeks you disparage so much will be moving into management at major corporations and asking the question, "Why do we spend more money for an inferior product?"

It will take time, but it's happening.
