So what's the new Lyndon "bio"? Is it the next volume of the tapes?

As for Lyndon as a liberal, I did not have in mind his actions as president, rather his complete destruction of the left wing of the state Democratic party in Texas during his time as Senator and President. Check with Ralph Yarborough on this one.

Or, if you love to read good, even superb, even the class of the field, political biographies, read Robert Caro on Johnson. I think those books are better than his Robert Moses book.

As for the "lousy human being", check Caro's discussions of how he beat Coke Stevenson for the Senate seat in 1948; or the long, thorough discussions of how he used his political positions to build up a rather large bundle of cash.

As for his presidential period, he was definitely, on the domestic front, a national liberal. As for his Vietnam policies, we could debate that one forever. I hope we stick to the notion that such a debate would take the thread too far afield.
