Bernard Goldberg: Tom Shales Hit a Favor to Dan Rather

Was a nasty column by Washington Post TV critic Tom Shales about "Bias" author Bernard Goldberg payback to CBS newsman Dan Rather because Rather once helped out one of Shales' friends?

Goldberg himself said so Monday during an interview with WRKO Boston's top radio talker, Howie Carr.

Earlier this month Shales took several very personal potshots at the network news whistle-blower, whose best-selling book criticizing Rather continues to ruffle feathers at CBS.

Writing in something called "Electronic Media," the TV critic described Goldberg as "inept," "a no-talent hack" and a role model for "disgruntled has-beens." Shales even threw in a reference to Goldberg as "disheveled and bleary eyed" for good measure.

The "Bias" author responded in his own Washington Post screed Saturday, but he saved his best material for Carr's show, where he suggested the Shales' hit piece was an attempt to return a favor to the "CBS Evening News" anchorman for throwing a party for Shales' "good friend."

GOLDBERG: He threw him a party. And I was wondering, why is Rather throwing - it was a book party, as a matter of fact - for a guy who was, like, a minor producer on a morning program. I didn't get that.

CARR: Uh huh.

GOLDBERG: Then someone said, you know, like, "Schmuck, this guy and Shales are good friends." So, Shales has been pretty good to Rather over the years. I mean pretty, pretty good.

So, I mean, I just thought what Shales did was wrong in and of itself. I mean, it was so incredibly nasty about me. But you asked the question that nobody else thought of asking. And that is, "Wait a second, was [Shales] doing somebody a favor?" Yeah, I think he was. I think he was.

I think he was saying, "Dan, you've been good to me and my friends, and I'm going to be good to you." (End of Excerpt)

Jackson to lead rally for workers

The Rev. Jesse Jackson will be in Houston on Friday to support the thousands of Enron employees who lost their jobs and much of their retirement savings when the company collapsed.

"The government was neutralized because they were in collusion with Enron and could not protect the interest of the workers," he said.

Jackson will meet with community leaders and ministers at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church on Friday morning. At noon, he will lead a prayer vigil and rally.

Jackson said he is also seeking a meeting with President Bush and Enron Chairman Ken Lay.
