I doubt that will be their major position.

IIRC, at the time AOL was seen by MSFT as major competition and was refusing the OEMs permission to add the AOL startup Icon to the Windows desktop. Essentially MSFT was saying, I don't care what AOL is willing to pay you(MR. OEM), I forbid you to modify the product I'm selling you to include their product.

The deal that broke the ice, was for AOL to use Explorer. Once AOL agreed to that, effectively putting their reach in Microsoft's hands, MSFT allowed the OEMs to include AOL on the computers desktop.
