heatsinker: There's probably some truth in there somewhere. AMD is probably paying for part of a new fab and in return will receive some sort of stock or options.

I recall UMC delayed their Q1 CC a while back (from Jan30 to Feb05), presumably due to some "big news".

There were two general speculations: XBox chips for NVIDIA / Processors for AMD.

Both are pretty much a sure thing, IMHO, although the timing is uncertain.

Microsoft has insisted on a second source for the XBox chips (TSMC being the primary) and there just aren't that many alternatives to UMC. Additionally, it's public knowledge that UMC is (or was) working with NVIDIA to qualify production of the XBox graphics chip.

As for the AMD part, AMD has publicly stated that UMC will be the foundry of choice.
