Silicon Valley has grown up in the shadow of HP, formerly, the greatest American company, ever. I started working with people at HP in 1973. HP was an engineering company. Risk taking meant betting on ideas and people. The quality of ideas and people at HP and in Silicon Valley made conservative business practices an obvious virtue. One doesn't need fancy accounting when one is reinventing the world. One can consider the recent bubble a Wall Street infection that has, hopefully, only temporarily, distorted the Silicon Valley culture.
