All the yammering I occasionally hear on the radio and TV has been singularly fatuous and devoid of any facts that might actually inform ones understanding. Thank you Sam. I was sitting in front of the TV a few nites ago, pulling ticks out from around my beltline, watching Ken Lay's wife do her "poor us" drill on the news. One of her main points seemed to be that poor Ken had the wool pulled over his eyes...did no evil, saw no evil, heard no evil, spoke no evil. Shortly after that, I come across this most interesting memo, dated 14 Aug 2001, which Sam has so kindly posted. Can't help but chuckle. I must suppose Ken doesn't talk about business with his wife. I wouldn't be quite so quick to jump on Watkins case here though. Imagine yourself in her spot, or that fellow that blew his brains out. First of all she is presumably writing to a big kahuna, a smooth dude accustomed to being the manipulator, not the manipulatee. Her goal is to move this turkey to DO something.......and at that she failed. But a smart VP would select language, presentation, and arguement designed to fit the target and ethics probably wouldn't move this one. As I read this, particularly the very first paragraph coupled with the very last paragraph (item 6), she is making a subtle veiled threat to go public. She could still be a snake in the grass...but in these circumstances I wouldn't agree this memo conclusively establishes that. It is going to be interesting to see how far this goes towards cleaning up corporate accounting and reporting in America. That is the one silver lining in this debacle. For those of us that actually read 10k's and the like, this could be a Godsend. Best Regards.....Tom
