Netscape lost on Windows and Mac, and there was no way they could regain decent market share on the Windows or Mac desktop. By making it open-source, they make sure that their name isn't forgotten now that open-source systems that do not include Microsoft Internet Explorer, are on the rise. If they had not made it open-source, Netscape would be a company long forgotten.

As an investor, Netscape as a browser has no influence on anything any more, and neither has MSIE. Microsoft killed Netscape and now owns the only important HTML engine on Windows.

The only real competition against MSIE is Opera - and that browser has the same errors in their implementation as MSIE, and even announces itself as MSIE 5.0 to webservers. It's a commercial, well made MSIE clone, and thus does not have any important influence on Windows.
