There is a great little book, Neo, titled "Five Days in London: May 1940," that describes Churchill's magnificent stand in his own country against the defeatists. France was poised to surrender, and defeatism was rampant in the British cabinet and among the populace. Churchill was not even well-known or particularly admired in Britain at that time, and he alone stood up against those who wanted to seek the best settlement they could get from Hitler. It was then that he made his stirring "We shall never surrender..." speeches and single-handedly shored up support for Britain fighting on alone. It is a fabulous story of what one man of courage, conviction, and determination can accomplish against all odds.
