the accounting term "pro-forma" has been around for a century, but nobody used it.

amazon.com was the first modern company to start using it, and the current quarter was the first time that first call reported proforma numbers exclusively. every single number that first call lists is a pro-forma number. they don't even have an entry for GAAP numbers anymore. it has disappeared.

i am absolutely floored that every publicly traded company on earth is jumping into the proforma scam so shortly after enron exploded in accounting smoke and mirrors.

it absolutely boggles the mind.

We are in agreement I just thought pro-forma started before REG-FD.

It did. AMZN more or less popularized the tactic, and they've been using it since at least '98.

In the old days MSFT used to guide down every single quarter so they would always beat. This earning expectation, beating expectation game has been going on for a very long time, long before pro forma or Reg FD. The phrase that always got me is when someone said a particular company was "expected to beat expectations".
