First, there is genuine ideological acceptance, on the part of many, that we are fat and happy at the expense of the rest of the world. We have exploited the resources of the Third World through unfavorable terms of trade, and ensured that there is no rebellion through military aide to dictators, and occasional direct action. Now, it can fairly easily be shown that this is a crock: those nations which have been most open to trade with the West have prospered, relative to other countries: Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, Turkey, to name a few. Similarly, those countries which have been most dependent upon the United States politically have prospered. Nevertheless, many people seriously assume that since business is not altruistic, therefore it must be exploitative, and thus that it must be true that capitalist countries have been "neo- colonialist" powers, in the worst way. Additionally, there are those who subscribe to a reverse racism. Whites have shown a restlessness that has led to empire building (Persian, Greek, Roman, Moorish, Turkish, English, etc.) and a yearning to overcome nature, rather than live in peace with it. They have roamed the earth in pursuit of trade, developed engineering and technology, and explored and exploited the rest of the world. Whether "racial" or cultural, whites, in this perspective, seem to be the most dangerous race. This, of course, is to turn on its head the claim to pre- eminence of the West: that it has had the urge to progress, and been the means through which the world has come together, and the general lot of humanity has improved. Instead, we are the wreckers of Eden. Thus, for many the self- loathing is real enough. Add to that the fear of being gullible. "You don't really believe what the (self- interested) authorities tell you, do you? Of course not, you see through everything." Of course, it is likely enough that the mainstream is largely honest because of the mechanisms of scholarship that are in place. No substantial controversy will be denied a thorough airing. Anyway, add these things to mix, and you have a more complete account of the problem on college campuses.......
