IBM Delivers Feature-Rich, Entry-Level Thinkpad Notebook
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC--(INTERNET WIRE)--Jan 23, 2002 -- IBM today announced a new, affordable ThinkPad R Series notebook computer, the R31, with new security features designed to help users protect critical information. IBM also announced two additional ThinkPad notebooks, the ultraportable X23 and a refresh of the thin and light T23, as well as two new NetVista desktop models with faster Intel processors.

Select new ThinkPad R Series models now feature for the first time IBM Embedded Security Subsystem. IBM also now offers ImageUltra as a service. ImageUltra technology is designed to reduce the number of master software images maintained by IT support personnel.

"More and more, customers are looking for innovative products and the complete end-to-end solution that only IBM can offer," said Leo Suarez, vice president, worldwide product marketing, IBM Personal Computing Division. "With today's announcements, IBM now provides security, manageability and wireless capabilities across select models of the entire mobile product line. "

Innovative PC Technology

IBM provides an extensive array of innovative, value-added features and services that help address customer concerns, including:

- Security: One of the most important issues for IBM customers, IBM has addressed PC data security with the IBM Embedded Security Subsystem, which can help protect information over both wireless and wired networks. Now available on select ThinkPad and NetVista models, the security subsystem includes two parts: the IBM embedded security chip and IBM Client Security Software (available by download).

- Manageability: ImageUltra, a separately available service based on patented IBM technologies, helps to dramatically reduce the costs associated with managing large numbers of personal computers. Maintaining a large number of master software images is a significant problem faced by company IT departments worldwide.

- Wireless: Select new models of the ThinkPad X23 now include integrated Bluetooth capability.

Additionally, IBM today introduced optional Solution Packs for the ThinkPad Professional, which consist of selected IBM and third-party accessories and services in convenient and easy-to-buy packs.

New ThinkPads and NetVistas

The new ultraportable ThinkPad X Series now includes the ThinkPad X23, weighing only 3.4 pounds and featuring a battery life of up to nearly five hours. Dan3 in Chicago will, of course, only get 45 minutes of battery life on these new models. IBM scientists and engineers are being dispatched to Chicago to investigate this peculiar phenomenmon, observed only in this locale.

The new entry-level ThinkPad T23 now includes a CD-ROM drive, a 14.1-inch screen and an Intel 1.2 GHz Pentium III-M processor. ThinkPad T23 prices range from $2449 to $3849. ThinkPad R31 prices range from $1249 to $2399; ThinkPad X23 prices range from $2149 to $2549.

In desktop computers, IBM today announced new NetVista M41 and NetVistaA22p models that include the Intel Pentium 4 processor running at speeds up to 2.2 GHz. NetVista M41 prices range from $1149 to $1749; NetVista A22p prices range from $849 to $1899.

All IBM PCs can be purchased direct through ibm.com or by calling 1-888-SHOP-IBM. The ThinkPad and NetVista lines are also available through select IBM business partners. For more information, see ibm.com/thinkpad and ibm.com/netvista.
