Hi Chris,

Argentina was a minor military power during that time. Sufficient for the context of South America but not any sort of major player globally...about the same as Brazil. Brazil and Argentina were the two major players on the continent, Brazil was larger and more populated but Argentina was somewhat more prosperous and could forge links with the rest of the Spanish speaking countries. The old joke from those times was that an Argentinian is an Italian who speaks Spanish, thinks he's English and acts like he is French. The Peronistas started Argentina's economic decline.

Henry

Chris, at one point Argentina was considered the "United States" of S. America, due to the heavy European immigration to both of our countries. That very multi-cultural diversity, and the extensive European contacts (read financial) led to large investments in the country, most of which went sour (as many did in the US).

It would be an interesting comparison and contrast to see how both nations differed in their early development, and how that shaped their inevitable economic course.

Btw, the Euro is back down to .86 again. Triple bottom approaching at .83, or pending breakdown to new lows?? Evidence that the dollar is going to gain strength against it to an even greater degree??
