No person thought it should have been used. " I have never heard such a ridiculous and senseless statement. What a time waster you are!<gg> The main force behind the dropping of the bomb was General Leslie Groves who created Operation Silver Plate in 1944 for the purpose of training about 1500 men to be involved in the bomb drop. A group of convicted murderers, etc. were assembled as ordnance men and were promised immunity if they did their job well. O April 25, Groves took over the entire operation by fiat...and with the acquiescence of Marshall. Thereafter he achieved his most decisive victory when he was able to keep any formal discussion of the bombing drop away from the agenda of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This was decisive, as Truman's chief of staff (Leahy) was opposed to the bombing--knowing full well that Japan was already defeated, and that it was surrender that was needed, and not the defeat which already was. If there had been formal discussion here the bomb never would have been dropped. But Mr. Groves was to have his way. Groves now had tremendous power and influence. He headed the Military Policy Committee; and he controlled the Target Committee. He controlled 15 aircraft and two bombs. He had always intended to use them, and now his time had come. He then revised a bombing directive he had prepared in May, and he reissued it. It was now July. It was signed by Thomas Handy (deputy General), and it directed General Spaatz as to how the bombing targets were to be hit. This was a single order which authorized both Hiroshima and Nagasaki to be bombed within a wide latitude of date and time. There is no evidence that Truman ever saw the order. So, right Lazarus...it just slithered aboard the plane. Actually, you really don't know how accurate that remark is. Wisdom from the mouths of babes...
