Madison Man May Be Deported to Afghanistan
Mirwais Ali Moved To Wisconsin When He Was 1

POSTED: 5:52 p.m. CST January 23, 2002

MADISON, Wis. -- Mirwais Ali moved to Wisconsin from Afghanistan when he was a year old, but he now faces deportation to that country because he was convicted of a drug charge.

Ali was born in Afghanistan in 1979 but speaks only English and doesn't know anyone there.

An immigrations judge will decide this week if the Madison man who was convicted of selling drugs should be deported to his birthplace, even though he has spent 21 of his 22 years in the United States.

His family fled the wartorn country in 1979 and settled in Madison where Ali grew up, but he never became a U.S. citizen.

A Chicago immigrations judge will decide Thursday whether Ali was selling drugs when Madison police stopped him in October 1998, or whether the marijuana packets he had were for his personal use. He was convicted in Dane County of possession of marijuana with intent to sell.
