Alcatel and Canada's TELUS Partner to Accelerate Delivery of Broadband
Access

Telco chooses Alcatel DSL solution to power aggressive expansion of high-speed Internet
access

Paris, January 23, 2002 - Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA), the world leader in
broadband access, has been selected by TELUS (TSE: T,T.A and NYSE: TU), a leading Canadian
operator, to provide digital subscriber line (DSL) equipment. Expanding its high-speed Internet
offering, TELUS will invest up to $250 million over the next three years in Alcatel Asymmetric
Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) technology.

Alcatel will supply the Alcatel 7300 Advanced Services Access Manager (ASAM), the world's
most widely deployed broadband access platform, to underpin TELUS' expansion of high-speed
Internet services across Canada. TELUS already relies on the industry-leading Alcatel 7670
Routing Switch Platform and the Alcatel 5620 Network Manager to guarantee reliable, end-to-end
network performance and faster rollout of services.

Canada is a global pacesetter for broadband adoption. Consultants eMarketer report that in 2001,
16 percent of Canadian households had broadband access, a penetration rate second only to
South Korea. Today, TELUS Velocity offers its users high-speed connection to online
applications as well as complete access to telus.net, one of Canada's premier Internet Service
Providers delivering innovative tools and services that ensure customers can experience the
Web to its fullest.

"TELUS is committed to providing innovative solutions for our customers by integrating the power
of the Internet with wireless and wireline technologies and useful content and applications,"
says Darren Entwistle, TELUS President and Chief Executive Officer. "Working with Alcatel to
expand our ADSL high-speed Internet service is a key step in meeting that commitment."

In the near future, ADSL technology will deliver an array of new Internet Protocol (IP) services
such as wireless Internet applications, music downloads, online gaming and video on demand.
Alcatel is working with a number of partners, including France's Thomson Multimedia, to develop
and commercialise the fully integrated technology behind these new services that will reach into
millions of households and enable providers such as TELUS to unlock the full revenue potential of
broadband access.

"Partnering with Alcatel offers us the experience and expertise that will help ensure our network
and services implementation is successful," says Dr. Girish Pathak, TELUS Chief Technology
Officer. "Alcatel's state-of-the-art DSL solution is the right technology to deliver broadband
Internet services now. By continuing to work closely with Alcatel, we are putting the
infrastructure in place to unleash the full power and flexibility of IP connectivity to our
customers."

"Alcatel's global leadership in fully managed, end-to-end network solutions will assist TELUS in
keeping Canada at the forefront of easily accessible broadband entertainment and business
services", Michel Rahier, President of Alcatel's Broadband Networking activities. "Alcatel DSL
offers not only high-speed services today, but also the ability to expand and scale, providing
further profitable services such as voice and video over DSL from the same platform in the
future."
