How sad for Brookings, but typical: Strobe Talbott:Brookings Institution Names President Thursday January 24 7:24 PM ET Brookings Institution Names President WASHINGTON (AP) - Former diplomat and journalist Strobe Talbott has been named president of the Brookings Institution, one of the nation's oldest political think tanks. Talbott, 55, is currently in charge of Yale University's center on globalization studies. He served as deputy secretary of state during both terms of the Clinton administration. Before his stint with the State Department, he spent more than two decades as a reporter, editor and foreign policy columnist for Time magazine. ``In addition to his keen intellect and deep background in key public policy issues, he will provide the energy, the judgment and the sense of balance and fairness that our unique institution requires,'' Brookings Chairman James Johnson said. Talbott said the job is a great honor and opportunity. ``Sound policy depends on non-partisan, independent research and analysis of the kind that Brookings has generated for more than eight decades,'' Talbott said. ``I have long admired the Brookings Institution's reputation for excellence and objectivity.''
