My understanding is that the pissing point is that the United States refuses to declare the illegal combatants as prisoners of war.

Do you think that a captured terrorist is a POW? Should the British treat the individuals who bombed London department stores as a POW? Should the Spanish treat car bombers from ETA as a POW? Should Carlos be treated as a POW? Should the former members of the SLA be treated as POWs?

Maybe these "European leaders" were hoping that the United States experience in Afghanistan would be similar to the the Soviet or British experience in the country. Well, our troops aren't all home yet - so there is always the chance they'll get their wish - I hope not. Anyway, these concerned "european leaders" have company...I heard that Ramsay Clark has filed a lawsuit if Federal Court about the treatment of the captured illegal combatants.
