Like 3DNOW, software maker will delay implementation of x86-64 until Intel set the standard

Linux will certainly not delay anything. Microsoft supported 3DNow right off the bat, so why do you assume they would delay supporting x86-64? In addition the performance of the Hammer will be better compared to the P4 than the K6-2 compared to the Pentium II. Competition from Linux and the rising popularity of the Hammers will force Microsoft's hand before Intel's version is ready.

Gottfried,

The Mercury news article mentioned "turning on the switch" to enable 64 bit. But that's not how software works. The lead time is at least a year or 2. If Intel wants to just flip the switch, it has to be Hammer compatible, or face a 2 year delay.

bacchus ii:

"AMD will eventually have to wait for Intel and will remake his X86-64 compatible to Intel but will be 18 mounts too late."

No chance unless AMD drops the ball...Things are moving to quickly in this field for anyone to wait any length of time for somebody to set a standard...AMD's momentum which began with the Athy 2 to 3 years ago is accelerating!!! Nobody's going to wait 18 months for INTC to catch up!!!
