That's because you're thinking of Linux as a desktop OS. Think AOL Set-top Box running
Linux, and all will be clear. Think AOL wireless PDAs/cellphones running Linux.

I see clearly however, why does AOL have to buy any company when they can put together and customize their own freeware version of Linux? I'm sure the Netscape gang can do a damn good job. And then, there's a better Unix OS for embedded systems called QNX which is a much smaller footprint and is currently used in telecom equipment as a realtime OS.
