Money from the US to the terrorists-

Authorities at O'Hare International Airport intercepted more than $650,000 in cash that was hidden inside cereal boxes in luggage waiting to be loaded aboard a plane bound for Amman, Jordan, the U.S. Customs Service said Friday.

The Chicago-area man who checked the bag Thursday night aboard the Royal Jordanian airlines flight was taken off the plane at O'Hare and questioned, said Customs Service Special Agent Larry Dennelly. No charges had been filed by Friday evening.

Airport sources said the bag containing the money--bundles of mostly $10 and $20 bills--did not undergo required security screening. Authorities were trying to determine how the bag almost made it onto the plane.

Dennelly said there was no indication that the money was linked to terrorist activities.

"We are trying to determine if [the passenger who checked the bag] has a legitimate business and to locate the source of the money," Dennelly said.

He declined to say whether the passenger, who is a U.S. citizen, or anyone else has claimed the luggage or its contents--$651,817 secreted inside the cereal boxes.

Federal law requires anyone transporting more than $10,000 in cash or other monetary assets to file a declaration with the Customs Service.

Royal Jordanian officials at O'Hare confirmed that the money was recovered from a bag to be loaded on flight 264 to Amman, with a stop in Shannon, Ireland. The Airbus A310 had been scheduled to depart O'Hare at 8:15 p.m., but was delayed until 10:12 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

An airline source said the baggage already in the plane's cargo hold was removed and re-matched with passengers after the money was discovered.

An employee at the departure gate said that the bag was hand-carried down a staircase and outside to the plane instead of being put on a conveyer belt leading to a baggage-sorting room.

"A ground handler was then told to take the bag to a different spot than they are supposed to bring the luggage for loading into the cargo hold," said the employee, who declined to say who gave the instructions on how to handle the bag. "The bag was sitting outside the plane when someone else noticed it and brought it back upstairs."

Security personnel were notified and the bag was X-rayed, revealing the wrapped bundles of cash. The bag was then opened and a search uncovered the money inside the cereal boxes, officials said.
