CB, the Fed has control over something a lot more important than growth in the money supply. This is an interesting speech, especially the last two paragraphs:

>>And the Fed can control the growth of M1, but has no control over the growth of M2 and M3
.... The big growth in the money supply comes from the money market.<<

This has been my impression since some time, sort of crossed out by the cobra&labmouse kind of attention to the AG's magic wand ("will he, will he not"). Looked to me all the time that the whole world is watching the front door and the burglars have their trucks backed up at the back door entrance.

In simple terms: if Fed wanted to, could they (or He-Who- Is;-) put out the M3 brushfire? Given the resulting side effects of course.

Have not read yet Terry's ref.
