MS Works sucks wind.

Get the best MS Office suite you can afford (or use your old one) and just ignore the fact that Works is even on the computer.

Speaking from experience, you won't need to uninstall Works to use the Office suite. However, at some point in there Office stopped shipping product that could be freely transferred from machine to machine. (The software license always prohibited that, but at some point, 1999 maybe?, they started shipping Office with a protection code that didn't allow you to install it and use it more than 50 times before registering it with its serial number.)

Another possible problem is getting it to work with ME, since ME came well after Office 97. I don't know whether that causes problems or not.

Good luck.

P.S. You can save some Office files in a Works-compatible format by saving the file differently in Office. However, Works is so bad that I usually recommend trying something else first.

I would leave the MSWorks (mebbe put it on ignore) and just go ahead and install Office 97. They are two diffferent programs. I have a new Dell P-4 with MSWorks. Word 2000 is the word processing program that comes with MSWorks now. You may have a problem if you get an email with an attached Word file as to which Word will open the email. Others here could tell you how to fix that.
Your Office 97 Suite is a great program. If you dono't need all the bells and whistles of the new Office 2000 or Office XP, you'll do fine. If you do want the bells and whistles, and web-incorporations of the new Office, you will be happy getting a new one.
The only thing I use Works for is its data base program for labels and managing lists of names. good luck. larry

Is there any reason why I cannot, or should not, uninstall the MS Works suite, and install the MS Office 97

None that I know of. I would uninstall works first. Since Word 2000 probably came with your Works Suite you should not do a full install of 97 on top of Works. Installing the older version of Word could cause you some problems. I don't remember if the option to install only parts of 97 is part of the setup routine (it is part of office2000) but if that option is available (probably under advanced or custom option) you could try installing only Excel. I tried doing this at one time and was constantly prompted by the program to insert my installation disk to install the function I was trying to use. If you're not sure exactly what parts of Office 97 you'll need in the future just go with the full install.

After the install make sure you take Office out of the startup group. Check your Startup folder in your program files menu for a shortcut there also. It is a big resource drag.
