Nasdaq short interest drops in January

NEW YORK, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Short interest in stocks listed on the Nasdaq stock market fell to 3.99 billion shares in the month ended Jan. 15 from 4.17 billion shares in the previous month, Nasdaq said after Friday's close.

The short interest represented 2.30 times the market's average daily volume during the period, which includes all short-interest positions reported Dec. 17 through Jan. 10 and settled as of Jan. 15. In December, short interest represented 2.27 times the market's average daily volume.

Including the Nasdaq SmallCap Market, Nasdaq short interest fell to 4.02 billion shares in January from 4.21 billion shares in December.
