Limiting liability would be one thing. Lowering the standards to establish liability would be unacceptable.

I frankly don't know the extent of the liability, how much they've already paid, how much they stand to lose or what effect this would have on their solvency. But the class-action lawyers are acting within the law, or at least in the absence of any law limiting what they can do. If the law needs to be changed, or established, then it needs to apply to all. I just can't see doing it one industry at a time, one company at a time. That's how we got Enron.
