You can reduce the chance of major Tsunami impacts by choosing a coastal location with a small distance of Ocean/Sea to the next land, and likely fairly stable offshore geology. Thailand's east coasts should be fairly safe. East coast of NZ though is very high risk... I'd like also to be a little above the ocean in case of global warming impacts (though I think very little or zero in this century) and the odd hurricane etc.
