Rick,

Our thoughts are with ya'll during this difficult time. We will be praying for your son's health & well being and will also pray that you and your wife will have the extra strength needed during this time! My daughter was in the hospital a few extra days when she was born because she was born with a "cold". It's not easy when a child is sick but it is sometimes comforting to know of all the prayers and support.

It sounds like your son is receiving the best of care. I'll also try to do some research and will let you know if I come up with anything. Please let us know how he is doing. God bless,
TTW

I had a urinary infection, exactly the same symptoms you describe- scared the hell out of me. I too had blood in my urine, but also some bright red straight stuff. No lethargy however. The antibiotics worked really fast, and cleared it up within 48 hours.
Best of luck- what I don't understand is the doctors saying they have never seen anything like it, being stumped, etc. I pray its just what I had.

drb..I'm sorry to hear of that development and I'll keep you folks in my thoughts. Was your son circumsized? I'm wondering if could have been complications with the procedure. The only other idea I had was do you see a orange crystaline substance in his urine? That might denote an infection or dehydration which could explain his lethargicness (God, my spelling sucks..LOL). Your wife and yourself should try and rest if you can...your in good hands there. The baby will need you both healthy as well. Hang in there...things will turn out fine. :-)

dr b.,

First, congratulations to your family for your new little miracle. I am sure that Zoie can't wait to practice her big sister skills. Eight pounds, seven ounces and 22.75 inches long, sounds like your local school may have their future center and first baseman........

Second, you have made the right decision on taking your newborn to St. Louis Children's Hospital. He will receive the best care in the country there. You have the best health insurance in the state, so that will also help in his care.

Third, the unknown is one of the scariest, feelings to have, especially when it comes to our children and family. That helpless feeling is terrible. See second point.

Fourth, you and your wife need to get some sleep. You can't make good decisions in this condition. Your wife needs major COMFORTING and rest at this time. Take something and get some rest. Hopefully by tomorrow the medicine will kick in and the blood will be gone.

Fifth, we will be praying for all of you.

Sixth, check your PM. Are you having any problems with finding help to watch Zoie?

Rick, your family needs your leadership here...reach down deep in that inner strength that you have.....you will find what you need there.

David

Hello,

I am certainly not a physician and I am sure that your baby is getting the best treatment available in your hospital...i have suffered from blood in my urine for most of my life (albeit microscopic)..i have been tested, probed and prodded to no avail...it does run in my male family line...some of the possible causes was something called Berger's Disease which is a (mostly) benign kidney disorder where the kidneys in the filtration process cause excess blood to be expelled which show up in urine...my best wishes for your baby...

Robert

hi,
if the doctors are stumped, get a second opinion.
congenital urogenital anomalies are very common, for instance.
I'm sure you have the best of care, but for piece of mind, a second opinion is needed sometimes.
Riley hospital in Indianapolis is an excellent childrens' facility.. Part of my training was there.
Good luck, feel free to pm me.

dr_b.,

My son was born a little over a year ago and I have found a couple helpful web sites that I frequent when I need baby related information or just to chat with other mothers. I will include their links below and maybe someone out in these 2 communities will have some helpful pointers. In the meantime, I will keep positive thoughts for your family.

babycenter.com
about.com

God Bless,
Iso

dr_b: Sorry to hear about your son's problem. I am the wrong kind of doctor, not an M.D. Sounds like you are in good hands, though don't be shy about getting other specialists or consults.

Wishing your son a quick and full recovery,

Dr.Bob
