Like Art Cashin says, "Always have enough gold to bribe the border gaurds". Thats the only reason I can think of to own physical. It would be best if you can aquire with out leaving to much of a paper trail. If the sh*t really hits the fan then ownership may once again become illegal. as far as speculation shares and paper gold are probably the most liquid and have the least transaction costs.

I was just checking UPS rates. You can insure a package worth $20,000 for about $70, which is a lot better than the Postal Service (limit $5,000 and over $50 insurance for that).

Am still waiting to hear from anyone who has ever SOLD gold bullion. I am especially interested in hearing about selling it in Canada.

BTW, Kitco does not report gold sales to the United States Government because it is not required to do so.

I think I may go ahead and buy some Euro travelers checks for a stay in Prague next fall. The clown buck might have started to get wobbly by then.

Anyone got a chart of the dollar in its last major decline?

EDIT: Here's a site where the database has now been extended back to 1971. Try entering the Swissie againste the US Dollar and enter the date as Jan 01 1972. (click off the automatic parameter):
