Hi Don, China minted between 8,000 to 35,000 1 Oz Panda gold coins (slightly more in smaller denominations) per year since 1982 to now. The designs are different each year, but the coins sell as bullion (in HK) and sometimes as numistic in other parts (EBay). Small mintage number, easy to keep track of. I have never seen Panda coins in China. I bring them here for gifts even though I am not suppose to bring gold to China, but with Pandas, atleast I could argue with Customs that Pandas are legal tender. I do not know that they are, but the customs, just as I had thought (once found same on me a few years back), do not know that Pandas are not, and do not want to make the political mistake of saying a coin bearing the Temple of Heaven and the is not legal tender. Very feudal.

I have seen bars and taels in China but they were all from ancient times of dynasty and rebellion days.
