How do I establish whether software purchased at an auction is legitimate or not? My XP RC2 will expire in a month or so, and I am also considering upgrading MS Office 2000.

I've found some good deals but some of the low prices I've found leave me wondering how anyone can sell the software so cheap. Do you think that a program advertised as "new, sealed, never registered, with Microsoft hologram" is likely not a pirated copy, even at a heavily discounted price?

The last thing I want to do is pay what would be a huge mark up to some software pirate, with no dollars going to the developers.

But I do like a good deal. (:-) If it's legit.
