There is lots of room for fudging within GAAP. Pro forma just opens the door to much bigger fudging.

Silicon Graphics had worse pro-forma numbers than Gaap.

It was a real twist-of-fate, the bears on that thread pointing out the issues with the GAAP numbers and how pro-forma reflected the "real" results haha!

I agree companies should continue to report both. There is need for the proforma results. Maybe a few restrictions on the type of "onetime" charges would be my only critique.

Pre-ipo software companies use GAAP to their advantage too - they recognize revenue so conservatively that by the time they IPO revenue is coming in from years prior. It pumps up the numbers, no doubt about it and it is GAAP.
