My dad started in the credit department ... and over the years remained in related accounting responsibilities. For several years in my mid-childhood, he was involved in the monthly closing-of-the-books ... would get calls @ three o'clock in the morning to go in an find 3 cent imbalances. No kidding. He was transferred to California in '78 when all regional Standard Oil companies were integrated into the Chevron corporation. There, he was mid-level supervisor (not management, really -- lack of a bachelor's degree hurt him in promotion opportunity. He had three years -- via night school - but didn't finish to get the degree). At the time he retired in 1985, he was supervising 80 data entry clerks in retail credit card operations at Chevron's massive accounting center in Concord, CA. He was definitely one of the 'rank and file.' [Edit/PS] He and my stepmother, who also worked there in wholesale/jobber credit department, were both members of the Teamsters. LOL.. even though they were 'white collar,' they and everything else at their levels were union members. They went on strike in about 81, 82 or so for six weeks and both worked the picket line -- every workday for six weeks. The issue that my Dad seemed to believe was one of the major concessions of the agreement under negotiation with management was that of dental insurance. They got it. Union 'won' that little corporate war. And as such, he would also have a GREAT DEAL of comment today about employee pension plans, 401ks, annuities, etc. He sure as hell did the entire 35 years when he worked for the company. LOL!! bia
