Tommaso, >>Well, there seem to be some gold bugs on SI who would have been old enough to be investors in the 1970s.

Yes .. have some Krugerrands. <ggg>

A little history, grandfather brought gold as currency when he came to this country in the late 1800's. He took a few trips back to Norway and bought gold back from these trips. Never did turn what was left when the government was busy collecting. <ggg>

From what I hear alot of guys still are sitting on bullion they bought at mania prices. This creates a certain amount of overhang to bullion price in the US.

If you want some cheap gold go to a recreational gold prospectors show, or buddy up with someone from a gold producing area. Gold can be found in all 50 states and people do go out and recover it. Dust can be bought for cheaper than spot, but try to ascertain how pure it is. Most of the purities for certain areas are known so it's not too hard to find out if you know where it came from. Nuggets have collectible value and carry a certain premium.

I had always, since I was 30, kept 3% of my NAV in the form of physical metal; initially platinum, then added gold since late 2000. Now I am at 5.x% of NAV, with more in gold than platinum. As NAV increases, so goes metal hoard. The issue of selling had not occurred to me as the hoard is simply a 'Big Financial Reset Button', hopefully never to be used, and a gift to some lucky kid some day.
