The discussion was that the top of the line XP is almost as fast as NW. AMD said they made "10s of thousands" of those so what's the problem? You calling AMD a liar? <<<<<<< Your statement did not refer to any particular model of XP; and AMD did not, I repeat, did not say that AMD only made "tens of thousands" of model XP2000's. Hector did say AMD (from JC's notes) Shipped record units of microprocessors at 7 million 810 thousand with a favourable mix towards Athlon versus Duron. We shipped tens of thousands of model XP 2000 in the quarter and produced 4 million Athlons XP<< When you are talking about made and referring to the CC, the only figures for XP referring to production was the 4 mil. figure. The "tens of thousands" was in reference to shipped XP2000 models, even though the XP2000 wasn't officially introduced until Jan. 02. You calling AMD a liar? <<<<<<< No but you are by trying to misconstrue Hectors statements. They also said they hit full capacity in Q4. They also call their yields "World Class". They should have been able to ship 8 million XPs from that fab. <<<<< Wrong again. Hector did indeed say AMD was up to full capacity in Q4-01, however Hector also stated that AMD was also producing the .13 um models and SOI silicon models, and he didn't say anything about where Durons, and the chipsets were produced. Here is Hector's statement from the CC. Shipped record units of microprocessors at 7 million 810 thousand with a favourable mix towards Athlon versus Duron. We shipped tens of thousands of model XP 2000 in the quarter and produced 4 million Athlons XP. Yield and cycle times were at record numbers with line yield in the high 90s in our Fabs and cycle times at world class benchmarks. The same is true in our assembly and final test operations. The Palomino conversion in Fab30 has been flawless. And the productivity in the factory for Palomino has now surpassed that of older technology in our older fab. You will also note that Hector said cycle times at world class benchmarks which doesn't refer to yields. They also said they hit full capacity in Q4. They also call their yields "World Class". They should have been able to ship 8 million XPs from that fab. They didn't come close with their "World Class Yields". <<<<< Once again from the CC. http://www.jc-news.com/parse.cgi?pc/AMD/CC/2001Q4 <Dan> Thanks. What is you capacity utilization right now out of Fab 30? <Hector> I would have to say that we are ramping and using it as per our ability to sell the product and we are not selling everything we make and obviously as we convert the factories to 130nm, we are doubling practically the capacity of that factory. So when you look at our wafer starts, which some people do, we are running at capacity. When you look at its die per wafer capability, it is ramping up to be full by the end of the year. <Dan> Will you expect that ramp to be approximately linear or would it tend to be more back-end loaded in the year? <Hector> Very linear. You will note that there is a difference between capacity and production. You will note that Hector said that I would have to say that we are ramping and using it as per our ability to sell the product and we are not selling everything we make and obviously as we convert the factories to 130nm, we are doubling practically the capacity of that factory. HMMM there is a novel concept. Producing what one can sell, not what one can make. Apparently these guys are smarter than you think. Intel ought to try it once in awhile.
