Well, the Soviets wound up giving a lot of stuff back

They did!? News to me! When did Germany get East Prussia back, aka Kaliningrad? When did Poland move 200 miles east to her pre-war borders? Did Russia ever even give those islands, the Sakhalin Islands (if I remember correctly) back to Japan?

No, Russia didn't give anything back. They lost control of their empire, quite a different story.

Actually, a lot of people think that China should give back Tibet. But nobody wants to start a war with China over it.

Well yes. But the same crowd that overflows with sympathy for the poor, poor Palestinians and loud wrath against Zionist imperialism is remarkably sotto voce about Tibet. And the Tibetans are getting rough treatment, for the Han Chinese think about them about like we used to think about the Sioux. Uncivilized savages at best, encumbrances to be disposed of, at worst.
