PT: I thought IBM and Motorola were also using SOI for at least some product lines so while AMD may be a large customer there would be others.

I'm not sure how much Motorola is actually making with SOI. Most of their process aggression these days appears to be more on-paper than in-fab.

That leaves pretty much only two volume SOI wafer customers: IBM and TSMC.

At one point, IBM made all their own SOI wafers, but I'm not sure what the status on that is currently. They did license their SIMOX technology to Ibis (http://www.ibis.com/ ). I'm not sure if part of the deal also entailed that Ibis would make wafers for IBM.

I also have a question concerning bulk vs epitaxial wafers - what is the difference? A link to a reference or two would be appreciated. TIA

Unfortunately, IBM has taken down their SOI presentation, but the info appears to be still available in PDF format:

You might also find some interesting info on Ibis' site.
