To me, it is consumer psychology to understand that the American public wants cheap and "good enough." (Even if it isn't really good enough.)

Thanks to everyone who responded to my post last weekend.

Allen, special thanks to you for giving us the latest date on Photoshop for X. I kind of got the buzz from MacWorld that they'd said soon but couldn't find the exact comment to narrow that down. I'll take June 26th. Again, I believe strongly that more than any app, this one will really drive sales of the Pro machines. Particularly if there's a big Pro upgrade by MacWorld NYC.

Doren, I agree with you about Mac OS not moving forward very far until recently. And I do see OS X appealing to the linux people I know. One programmer I know first got intrigued by the Titanium PowerBook as a beautiful piece of hardware but no interest in the classic OS. Then last summer working on a contract at Adobe he got to futz around with X and do a few cool things. Then doing some work with FileMaker a few months he helped write a little X app add-on. Last week he asked me if I knew a place to buy a cheap Cube as a development machine.

Btw Doren, as per your 31955, I think I wasn't clear. I'm used to referring to the pro machines as "G4s" and that's probably why you thought I was talking about iMacs.

Norm, I agree with you about the Apple Stores. Very nice. But I too was expecting even more software. I felt that they had the best selection I'd seen of expensive, Mac pro software. Ie, you probably don't need to special order a copy of Quark. But I felt there could have been more games. Especially ones that are a year or two old. Btw, I was in a Gateway store last week for the first time. Kind of nice but it's really nothing more than a glorified kiosk. You can't even pick up a printer there.

Steven, buddy, I can't believe you are still short. That's a buy and hold short now and I thought you weren't interested in doing that. What do you think about Apple raising guidance for the current quarter? Estimates were 1.33 B and now they are 1.5 B. That's impressive. Watch out for this iMac replacement cycle--it will be quite powerful for a company of Apple's size.

Oh yeah--anyone know where to buy a Cube cheap? Preferably the CD-RW version? I'm not talking eBay--too expensive. I'm talking more like the education prices from last fall. Maybe $1100? I really think they sold through--there aren't 75,000 sitting in a warehouse somewhere.

Have a nice week everyone.

Marc

My comments about Bill are from observation. The man can sell wool to sheep if he sets his mind to it ;-) I'm not passing judgement on the intelligence of the average consumer, merely remarking on the ability of Bill to home in on and milk the instincts of people who are only too willing to open up their wallets to him in the hopes of higher productivity, better security, the next great patch, etc. But if you want to label the average Joe a sheep, well ... I won't stop you. I'm just saying what is (as opposed to what should be).

Good is relative. You have to agree that MSFT is "good" at spin, "good" at "extending and embracing", "good" at overcoming resistance, etc. It just depends on how you look at it.

Spineless or not, the PC makers have made tons of $$$ (until recently, anyway) riding on the Windows wave; and that has kept their shareholders happy for a while.

Gates only understands the psychology of sheep.

Get off your high horse. Macs were more expensive which made many people switch for the lower cost alternative.

Do you have caviar for breakfast? Champagne for lunch?

Of course not. That does not make anyone a sheep. They have simply (and sensibly) decided that the lower cost alternative is good enough.
