Elmer, It does seem that the processes differ, but it also seems they they will do some work in parallel and develop them on bulk and SOI at the same time. Circuit debug on bulk can be carried over to SOI and and time will be saved at the expense of some loss of efficiency and duplication. This is a reasonable tradeoff in such a race. I expect both AMD and Intel to make loads of scrap ion the wya to finished prototypes.

Elmer: It would make most sense to put the first version on bulk process to debug the logic and then move it to SOI. But without any process data how do they know what to expect in the way of process performance? How do you design for a process you know next to nothing about? This is a double wammy. Sure they'll run some SRAMs but that's not enough. The standard procedure is to use a non critical product to debug the process first. I don't see AMD doing this in time to meet current schedules.

Regardless of whether Barton is actually introduced to the market place, I would assume it will be used to develop and test the SOI process. AMD did the same thing with the K6-2/K6-2+ and their Dresden copper process: Although the Cu version of the K6 was never made in production volumes, it was the chip used by AMD to develop and test the process.

It seems logical that AMD would do the same for SOI, substituting an Athlon for the K6 chip.
