As they are both Germanic languages you might think them easy to compare for difficulty but I don't think that is the case due to English's large vocabulary and irregular spelling. English is more or less a creole of West Germanic (Platt-Deutsch, Dutch, Anglo-Saxon etc.) with French, like Yiddish is a South Germanic creole with Hebrew and Slavic languages and Pennsylvanian German with English... but now I'm getting really off the track :)
