A snowstorm for the record books
Agony and ecstasy as B.C. gets blanket of snow

Vancouver Sun
Monday, January 28, 2002

Scenes of snarled traffic and car accidents played out with those of children frolicking in the snow as a record-setting blanket of white settled on the Lower Mainland over the weekend.

While the average snowfall for the entire month of January is 20 centimetres, as many as 20 to 30 centimetres fell from midnight Saturday to mid-Sunday afternoon in areas such as Surrey and around the airport.

Previous records for the same time period hovered at under two centimetres, said Mitch Meredith, Environment Canada meteorologist.

"It's pretty unusual to get it all in one day," Meredith said. "It looks like easily we might have had the record snowfall for this date."

Environment Canada's Pacific Weather Centre reported 17 centimetres at the airport on Sunday, 23 centimetres in North Delta and 21 centimetres in Cloverdale.

Weather forecasters were predicting a return of the sun today, with cold temperatures, and possibly more snow later in the week.

...burr, and it's cold. minus five celsius this morning.
