I find myself wondering if Israel could not improve its security by repudiating the Oslo Accords and closing its border with the Palestinian-controlled areas. The Accords certainly don't seem to be working and seem to have created an untenable situation. But maybe that would make things worse.

The Accords are being repudiated step by step as the terror campaign continues. Sharon has moved cautiously to avoid a) the fall of his government b) US disapproval, c) too great a blow in world opionion. c) is a lost cause anyway imo; but a) and b) are the biggies.
The border has been closed since the start of the intifada. But when you picture the border to yourself, use the image of two hands with fingers interlaced. It's not easy to really close it.
